Arlington Christian Academy is an educational ministry of the Arlington Church of God, serving students from Kindergarten through the 8th Grade. The establishment of a Christian school was a part of the vision of the church’s Pastor Laureate, Dr. Ronald J. Fowler. In 1988, twelve energetic students were enrolled in the first Kindergarten class of the Academy. Dr. Diana L. Swoope, Pastor of the Arlington Church of God, was the founding principal. The Academy launched its mission to build academic competence, creative confidence and Christian character in every enrolled student; to “unite the love of learning with the love of God.”
In order to accomplish the mission effectively the school chose to add just one grade level per year until it reached the eighth grade. By 1990, the school had the required three grade levels to obtain a charter with the Ohio Board of Education. This charter gave full academic accreditation to the Academy, a certification process for our teachers, while still enabling the school to operate under its stated Christian mission. The school obtained the charter in 1991, and in the same year became a member of the Association of Christian Schools International.
In May 1997, twelve 8th grade students participated in the first Commencement Exercises of the Arlington Christian Academy. Graduates from our school have attended and excelled in the prestigious private high schools in the city of Akron, as well as in the Akron Public Schools. Our students have received academic scholarships to Case Western Reserve University, Ohio State University, Kent State University, Xavier University, the University of Akron, Spellman College, and Morehouse College to name a few.
Over the years, the Academy has sought to stay true to its mission by offering a comprehensive academic curriculum that included more than the traditional classes for an elementary school. Since the beginning the curriculum has included foreign languages such as French, Spanish, Swahili and German.
Missions and outreach have been an integral part of the Academy. Our students have volunteered or performed at Nursing Homes, the Haven of Rest, and the like spreading good news and cheer. Through student initiatives, the school has supported children in Tanzania, Uganda and Nigeria. We have raised money for several national crises, prepared care packages for soldiers who serve overseas and authored books on tape for patients in Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Through weekly chapel services, our students are challenged to “love the Lord with all their hearts, souls and minds.”
